Bordering France, Andorra, the Mediterranean, the Valencian region, and the Aragon region, Catalonia is an autonomous region of Spain. Its roots stretch back further than those of Spain itself, when the region was an independent territory of the Crown of Aragon. It became an independent region in the 1930s, and again in 1975, after the death of Franco.
